The RectorThe Rector Writes – March 2010

Dear Friends

Have you noticed that the passage of time speeds up as you get older? I don’t remember Einstein explaining that in his Theory of Relativity! It may come as a surprise to you that it is only four years since all church members were asked to fill in an application form for the membership list known as the Electoral Roll. The Diocese has reminded us that this is now due. Here are a few questions and answers about it.

Who is entitled to be on it?

Members of the Church in Wales who either live in the parish or have regularly attended one of our churches for the last six months. In practice, “Members of the Church in Wales” means baptised Christians who wish to be counted as members of this Church.

What difference does it make being on the Electoral Roll?

Legally, it entitles members to vote at the Annual Vestry Meeting (the Annual General Meeting of the Parish) and to stand for office as a warden or as a sidesman/woman. Practically it helps the clergy and officers keep in touch with the members if the list of names and addresses is up to date.

What does being on the Electoral Roll commit me to?

Nothing. You don’t have to pay a certain some of money each year or to undertake any duties by having your name entered on the Roll.

Do I have to include my telephone number on the form?

No, but it is a great help if you do. Phone numbers are not shown on the list of members, which has to be displayed in our churches before the Annual Vestry Meeting.

How can I return my form?

Leave it as either of our churches, or send it to me here at the Rectory or to the Electoral Roll Officer, Alan Brown at 8 Kent Close, Pen-y-Mynydd.

Yours sincerely
Martin Snellgrove
